An Appalachian Summer Festival began in 1984 as a chamber music festival and has developed over the years to become one of the nation's largest regional multi-arts festivals with over 26,000 people in attendance each year. Presented by the Appalachian State University Office of Arts & Cultural Programs, the annual arts celebration is held every July on and around the university campus, and features an eclectic, diverse mix of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and film. 33rd Annual Woolly Worm Festival

33rd Annuall Woolly Worm Festival, Saturday October 16th from 9am - 5pm and Sunday, October 17th from 9am - 4pm. Admission: $5.00 (adults) $2 (kids 5-12) under age 5- free. Worm Registration: $5.00

Some changes and additions from last year’s festival continuing through this year; opening the gates at 9:00 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and the expansion of the kid’s area in the park. There was special music on Sunday by the John Schuffler Band and local family pricing as well on Sunday. The added time at the festival gave festival goers more time to take in the over 140 food and craft vendors with their handcrafted items, plus rides, musicians and dance teams. Participants wishing to race their worm may register at 9:00 a.m., and shortly after that races begin.

25 worms are in each heat, “but please come early as race entries fill up early and we want,” says Director of the Chamber, Susan Freeman. Saturday’s winning Woolly Worm holds the esteemed honor of predicting the winter weather season and the Woolly Worm wins prize monies of $1000, which we hope the winning worm shares with its owner. Sunday’s winning Woolly Worm $500.

Don't miss this one of a kind festival where racing woolly worms is a highlight. A true predictor of the coming winter weather is the honor bestowed upon the winner of the final heat on Saturday. Woolly Worms are racing all day for this thwo day event with the Championship race held Saturday at the end of the festival close to the day's end for the festival. You will find great food, a woad wace, live entertainment, and lots of arts and craft vendors. The Woolly Worm races begin around 10 a.m. Each heat consists of 20 worms and races continue all day until the grand final around 4 p.m. The winning worm on Saturday is declared the official winter forecasting agent.

The Sunday worm races are for prestige, fun and small prizes.
In addition to the Woolly Worm Races, the festival features crafts, food vendors, live entertainment and much more. Last year's festival attracted an estimated 20,000 fans, 140 vendors and around 1,000 race entrants. And the $1,000 first prize that accompanies the prestige of having your worm used to pronounce the official winter forecast doesn't hurt either.

Grab your beer stein, put on your lederhosen and head to Sugar Mountain Resort for the 20th annual Oktoberfest celebration Saturday & Sunday, October 9 & 10, 2010. The weekend is packed with activities from 10:00am until 5:00pm. Admission and parking are free!

Over 40 artisan's and craftspeople open their stands at 10:00am each day. A sampling of this year's vendors include: chair canning, wooden toys, oil paintings, stain glass, handmade furniture, dolls, copper art, ceramics, honey, beeswax candles, bird houses, and much more.

Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage and a panoramic view of the surrounding area from the mile and a half long chairlift ride to Sugar's 5,300 ft peak. Everyone, even mountain bikers are welcome to ride the lift.

The children's activity center, located in the Ski School Play Yard will keep the young ones entertained each day from noon until 4:00pm. A $7 fee per child/per day includes hay rides, a chance to meet Sugar Bear and Sweetie Bear and several Airwalk stations. Cotton candy, popcorn, caramel apples, homemade cookies and drinks are also available in the children's activity center. All ages are welcome to participate.

An Oktoberfest isn't complete without the sounds of an Oom Pah Band. From noon until 4:00pm both Saturday & Sunday the Harbour Towne Fest Band, guarantees to bring the sounds, dances and enthusiasm of Bavaria to Sugar Mountain. The 15 piece band will enthusiastically play the sounds of Germany's Bavaria!

Blue Ridge Brutal 100

The Blue Ridge Brutal 100 is this Saturday, August 14. The ride tours two northwest North Carolina counties: Ashe and Alleghany and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Participants have three ride options: 50 mile, 75 mile and 100 mile. The ride is fully supported by SAG wagons and rest stops with water and snacks. Ham radio communication , fire and rescue squads support the ride. . A hot meal, t-shirt and chip timing is included.The starting time will be 8:00 am. Rider packets may be picked up Friday afternoon from 4-6 pm or Saturday morning from 6:15-7:45 am. Chips will be distributed Saturday morning from 6:15-7:45 am. Riders must have a number (numbers will be in packet) to receive a chip.

At the headwaters of this ancient river, we have a gentle stretch of water that families of all ages can appreciate. The river through Todd very rarely gets over a Class I rapid making, and it is wonderful for first-time kayakers. The kayaks we use are not whitewater kayaks that are meant to roll in waves; they are recreational kayaks, meant for less than Class II rivers. They have the most comfortable seats you can find in a kayak — and they’re made right here in North Carolina, too! We have single kayaks, tandem kayaks and canoes available, and we keep them very clean for every trip that goes out. Rest assured that you will not receive a life jacket that has years of ‘body perfume’ instilled in it, either. We take pride in the condition of all our gear — to make sure you have the most comfortable and unforgettable adventure on the river possible. We hope to see you soon!

Just for fun, here’s a little info about the New River: The South Fork of the New River starts in Blowing Rock, meanders its way through Boone and Todd, flows north into Virginia, comes back into North Carolina and then back into Virginia two more times before finally deciding to stay in Virginia. From there, it continues on to West Virginia, where it meets with the Kanawha River which turns into the Ohio River, which meets with the Mississippi River, which empties into the Gulf of Mexico … whew!

Annual Doc Watson Festival in Todd

The eighth annual Todd community benefit concert featuring Doc Watson & Friends is set for Saturday, Aug. 21, from 3 to 7 PM. The Tillers and The Forget-Me-Nots will also be featured at the concert.

Tickets to the concert are $15, $17 for credit card purchases. Children under 12 are admitted free. Only 1,500 tickets will be sold, that number being the capacity of Cook Memorial Park in the middle of Todd’s historic district.

Doc’s concert will again be dedicated to the memory of James Parsons, who was part of music in Todd from its very beginnings in the 1990s. Although James is now gone, the James “Crow” Parsons Memorial Fund is being built to finance future summer concerts at Cook Park. A pickle jar in the Todd Mercantile Bakery collects change and dollars for the fund, and the pickle jar is passed around during the Saturday afternoon concerts to help the memorial fund grow. TCPO, the nonprofit community organization, also seeks larger contributions to permanently endow the fund to provide dependable financing for the music series that James Parsons helped bring to Todd.

But the Memorial Fund, and James Parsons’ surviving family, benefit primarily from the sale of tickets for Doc’s concert. TCPO and the Todd community are forever grateful for Doc’s support and for his incomparable music.

This year’s Summer Music Series and other events at Cook Park are also supported by a grant from The Conservation Fund’s Creating New Economies Fund. In addition to the grant and ticket sales, sponsors have come forward, helping to underwrite some of the concert expense and leaving more for the memorial fund. Among this year’s sponsors are the West Jefferson TDA, local businesses, and several members of the Todd community.

Ola Bell Reed Music Festival 2010

Ola Belle Reed (1916-2002) was an acclaimed songwriter and musician, recognized by the Smithsonian, the National Endowment of the Arts and many additional organizations. Such celebrated artists as Marty Stuart, Del McCoury and the incomparable Tim O'Brien have recorded her signature song, High on A Mountain.

Featuring top-notch award winning visiting and local musicians from Americana, Bluegrass, Old-time, Country and Folk traditions, the Ola Belle Reed Festival is a community-based event and fundraiser for the Greater Lansing Area Development Committee (GLAD), a 501(c)3 organization committed to the revitalization of Lansing, the birthplace of Ola Belle Reed. The group consists of community volunteers who are dedicated to this annual event in the spirit of Appalachian tradition.

The Festival site is located in the town of Lansing, near the banks of Big Horse Creek and in the shadow of Phoenix Mountain. Musical acts will provide continuous day and evening concerts in addition to instrumental, songwriting, and voice workshops. An outdoor jam tent provides a place for amateurs and professionals to come together and exchange techniques. Jeff Mosier has shared the stage with Leftover Salmon, Widepsread Panic, Vassar Clemments, and many more. In 1994, Mosier toured with Phish while teaching the band all about the world of bluegrass. That’s right ladies; ATP bringing back this event series just for you!

On 2 more select Saturday evenings throughout the rest of the season, ATP will construct a terrain park area with features specifically designed for learning and progression that will be open to ladies only. We want women of all ages and abilities, both ski and snowboard, to get together and ride in a laid-back environment among friends.

The session will begin at 7pm, with a flexible, open format of whatever you girls would like to see. If you just want to make laps through the girls-only park, sounds great! If you are starting out and want to learn how to slide your first box, or how to hit a jump properly, ATP will be staffing select Trick Tip Advisors who will be happy to help you progress. Once the session has come to an end, we have lots of prizes which will be raffled off among all participants. Best of all, the event is Free with the purchase of a ski ticket!

APPropos!
Come enjoy a musical battle of the sexes! From Georges Bizet to
Irving Berlin, the complexion and complexity of love will be a musical
treat when APPropos takes the stage at the Ashe Arts Center at 7:30
p.m. February 12, 2010.
The Appalachian State University School of Music’s faculty ensemble,
APPropos includes Joseph Amaya, baritone; Mary Gayle Greene,
mezzo-soprano; Randall Outland, tenor; Julia Pedigo, soprano;
Priscilla Porterfield, mezzo-soprano, and Rodney Reynerson, piano.
The program will include opera, classical songs, and lighter selections
from Broadway musicals. Solos, duets, trios and the full ensemble will
create a memorable evening centered around the different "types" and
"stages" of love – all told in song.

Aspects of Love will be presented on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.
February 12, 2010 at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson’s Arts
District. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available
in advance by calling the Arts Council at 336.846-ARTS. Don’t
